local Kefalonia wine
It wasn't until the mid 11thCentury that wine on Kefalonia
became well known spreading ass far as the Black sea. Under venetian rulers
from the 14thCentury The wine became even better known with Venice being
the exclusive importer of Kefalonian wines Muscadet and Mavrodaphne.
A french winemaker originally started modern winemaking
but folded, under new ownership by British Merchantman Ernest Toole Kefalonian
wine once again flourished, right up until Wolrd War I where with the
depression and other rmarket influences Wine production again declined.
It wasn't until the mid 60's when Calligia a Greek wine company invested
in the wine industry here and brought the Robola grape to notoriety in
the international market.
Robola and why it is unique here. Robola
makes up a little over half the wine types grown here. It is accepted
that Robola is one of three of the finest white grapes produced in Greece.
It is granted the appellation of Superior Quality but only for Robola
produced in Kefalonia. Two other wines with similar status are the Muscat
and Mavrodaphne. Robola grows much higher up in the mountains whilst the
other two are cultivated nearer sea level. The Muscat is also acredited
Vin de Liqueur status and in Venetian times was monopolised to ensure
exclusive supply.
As you can tell there is much to Wines on Kefalonia and
the 'Wine growers association of Kfalonia and Ithaca has a good deal of
information available. You can
